Upon Dietrich’s return to Berlin from the Americas, he soon left for Switzerland to visit the famous Swiss Reformed theologian Karl Barth. However, around the same time, Dietrich wrote to the Swiss national Erwin Sutz, whom he had first met while in New York, that he sensed an exceptionally grim outlook for Germany at a tumultuous turning point in history. His sermons became much more dour and serious, amidst the rise of the pro-Hitler German Christian movement, committed to the subversion of the state church to a theology more compatible with the dogma of National Socialism.

It was inspired in part when I taught English in Poland from September 2004 to July 2005, when I found a bronze cross monument dedicated to Dietrich Bonhoeffer in now Polish Wroclaw, but pre-WWII Breslau -- the birthplace of Dietrich in February 1906. Eventually it came to include the Matriarch Ruth von Kleist who regarded Dietrich like a son.
As for myself, Vince Barwinski, I was born in Sydney Australia in 1962, taught English in Taiwan in 2003 and Poland, the land my paternal ancestors from September 2004 to June 2005. In Taiwan I met my future wife, whom I married upon my return to Australia from Poland in October 2005. However, it was in Poland, in February 2005 that I came upon my inspiration for this book. Namely the bronze cross memorial to the German anti-Nazi Lutheran pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer in the modern-day Polish city of Wrocław – pre-WWII German Breslau and birthplace of Dietrich in February 1906.
